Procedures such as nephrectomy and prostatectomy once required longer hospital stays and extended recovery times. Today, robotic-assisted surgery with the da Vinci® system provides a more advanced, minimally invasive alternative.
At Savannah Urology Associates, our experienced urologists use this state-of-the-art technology to perform a wide range of procedures with enhanced precision and control. Robotic surgery is associated with smaller incisions, reduced discomfort, and quicker recovery—allowing many patients to return to normal activities sooner.
Robotic surgery refers to procedures performed using the da Vinci® surgical system, an advanced form of minimally invasive surgery. This technology enables surgeons to carry out complex procedures with enhanced precision, control, and visualization.
During the procedure, a small camera is inserted through a tiny incision, providing high-definition, real-time images to a monitor at the surgeon’s console. Additional small incisions are used to introduce specialized instruments attached to robotic arms. The surgeon operates these instruments from the console, translating hand movements into precise actions while viewing the surgical area in magnified detail.
Using da Vinci® robotic technology, surgeons can perform advanced procedures with a high level of precision through small incisions. Two of the most common robotic procedures include robotic prostatectomy and robotic nephrectomy.
Robotic Prostatectomy:During this procedure, the surgeon removes the prostate gland along with any affected surrounding tissue. Unlike traditional open surgery, which requires a large incision, robotic prostatectomy is performed through several small incisions, offering a minimally invasive approach.
Robotic Nephrectomy:This procedure involves removing part or all of a kidney, along with nearby diseased tissue if necessary. Like robotic prostate surgery, it is performed using small incisions and robotic-assisted instruments, which can help reduce surgical trauma and recovery time.
With this minimally invasive approach, only a few small incisions are needed. For patients requiring prostate or kidney surgery, robotic techniques can help achieve effective results while minimizing pain, scarring, and downtime.
Robotic surgery offers several advantages compared to traditional open procedures, including:
Many patients who undergo robotic prostatectomy or nephrectomy experience a quicker recovery and are able to return to normal activities sooner than with traditional surgery.
For conditions such as prostate cancer, kidney cancer, and other complex urologic conditions, robotic surgery provides a minimally invasive approach that enhances precision and supports improved outcomes.
