However, certain factors may increase the likelihood of developing the condition, including being female, having a family history of bladder disorders, increasing age, fair skin, or living with other chronic pain conditions.

How is Interstitial Cystitis Diagnosed?

To determine whether interstitial cystitis is the cause of your symptoms, your healthcare provider will begin with a thorough review of your medical history and a discussion of your symptoms. A physical examination is typically performed and may include a pelvic exam to assess the bladder and surrounding structures.

In some cases, additional testing may be recommended to better evaluate your condition and rule out other potential causes. These tests can include urine analysis to check for infection, cystoscopy to examine the inside of the bladder, bladder function testing, or, if needed, a biopsy to further assess bladder tissue. These evaluations help ensure an accurate diagnosis and guide the most appropriate treatment plan.

How is Interstitial Cystitis Treated?

Treatment for interstitial cystitis is tailored to each individual, based on symptoms, medical history, and the overall impact on daily life. A personalized care plan may include one or more of the following options:

Medications:
Oral medications or bladder instillations (medications delivered directly into the bladder) may help reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and improve urinary symptoms. Your provider will recommend the most appropriate options for your condition.

Physical therapy:
Pelvic floor physical therapy can help reduce muscle tension, pain, and tenderness in the pelvic region, improving both comfort and bladder control.

Sacral neuromodulation therapy:
Treatments such as Axonics® or InterStim™ use gentle nerve stimulation to regulate bladder function. This approach can help reduce urinary urgency, frequency, and related symptoms.

Bladder distention:
Performed during a cystoscopy, this procedure gently stretches the bladder using fluid. In some patients, it can provide temporary relief from pain and improve bladder capacity.
